IM Kids 3rd Meal is a community driven, not-for-profit, kids feeding program. Entirely volunteer based, our goal is to provide ‘3rd Meal’ sack dinners to food insecure elementary students within Ionia and Montcalm counties in Michigan, USA. The 2014 school year began our pilot phase, as we successfully provided ‘3rd Meals’ to over 380 students at two different elementary schools from April to June.
IN ORDER TO KEEP THESE KIDS FED, AND TO FURTHER EXPAND OUR PROGRAM, WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Why do we need your help?
IM Kids makes 380 sack dinners a day. Every 3rd Meal is made the morning of its intended consumption and is dropped off at school in the afternoon for student pick up. Each sack dinner consists of:
- Sandwich (PB&J or Meat/Cheese)
- Fruit or Vegetable Serving
- 100% Juice Box
- Granola Bar
- Healthy Snack
Because we use our facility for free, and because our staff is consists entirely of Americorps VISTAs and volunteers, IM Kids is without overhead costs. So: what is the main expense within IM Kids?
It costs us $2 for every 3rd Meal we make. Now, Feeding America does allow us to purchase at their warehouse for a discount rate, but costs add up quickly: feeding 380 kids, 5 days a week, 9 months a year at $2 each is very expensive!!!!
To add to our troubles, up until now, the purchasing of this food has been mostly grant-funded, with the addition of small donations made by area residents and in-house volunteers. While this was a great source of start-up funding (our start-up $50,000 food grant will run out this September), this model alone cannot possibly keep us afloat as we look to further our expansion.
HELP US BUY THESE KIDS DINNER.
How can you help?
With $10,000, we can sustain our current operation (just two schools) for the entire school year. Kids at Emerson Elementary in Ionia and Walnut Hills Elementary in Greenville will ALL have dinner… Every Five Days a Week.
With an additional $10,000, we can expand our operation further. Where have we set our sights on next? Carson City Elementary in Carson City!!!
Add ANOTHER $10,000? We could buy a walk-in freezer, for long-term food storage. At this point, a freezer would be a grand luxury…. but why not dream big?
